Enjoy the Romance of the Rails on this adventure filled tour that takes you from the battlefield of Gettysburg to the luxury of Greenbrier.  Walk in the footsteps of a coal miner and tour the storied past of the Adaland Mansion where a sumptuous dinner waits.  Ride the rails looking for eagles and passing through some of the most beautiful countryside in America.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Home - Gettysburg, PA

We depart this morning for Gettysburg, PA. Upon arrival, we stop at the Gettysburg Visitor Center before meeting our Military Park Guide who will take us on a tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield. Afterwards, we have dinner, included, at the Dobbin House Restaurant before checking into our hotel for the evening. (D)

Day 2 - Romney, West Virginia

After breakfast this morning, it’s ‘All Aboard!’ Our day starts with a 3-hour tour (lunch included) on the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. Our route goes southbound through the Trough to Sycamore Bridge and back. It is approximately 35 miles round-trip through very picturesque country side – look out for Eagles! We continue to Elkins, WV and check into our hotel for the evening. After, we have dinner included at historic Adaland Mansion. Built in 1870, the 23-room, Greek Revival mansion house, has been restored with great attention to authenticity and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Natural Bridge, Virginia

Breakfast, is included again this morning before we take our second train ride, out of Durbin, WV. The 2-hour journey is pulled by the DURBIN ROCKET, a very rare steam locomotive – Old #3 is one of only three operating Climax geared logging locomotives on earth! We then make our way to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, here we experience the largest steering dish in the world! This afternoon, it’s off to famous Natural Bridge, Virginia. Located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Natural Bridge was once owned by Thomas Jefferson.   Overnight at Natural Bridge Historic Hotel with dinner included. Also included, will be the show Drama of Creation beneath Natural Bridge. (B,D)

Day 4 - White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia

Our day starts with breakfast, before heading off to visit to the Bunker at the Greenbrier Inn, America’s best kept and most interesting secret. The bunker was built to house Government officials in case of a nuclear strike.  We have lunch at this 5-star historic property before continuing to Beckley Coal Mine. Here, we tour a mine using authentic mining cars as we learn about this integral West Virginia industry. Later, on our return to Elkins we stop in Roanoke, WV for dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 5 - Elkins, WV - Home

After breakfast, sit back and reminisce with your fellow travelers about all the interesting things we have seen and places we have been. (B)
