Itinerary
Day 1 - Arrive Rapid City, SD
Welcome to Rapid City, where your South Dakota journey begins. Meet your Tour Director for a meet and greet a 6:00pm. They will ensure you have some delicious dining options for dinner (on own) tonight.
Day 2 - Deadwood & Crazy Horse Memorial
Begin your day with a visit to the Crazy Horse Memorial, where you’ll take a bus to the base of the carving for a closer look at this monumental work-in-progress. Afterwards, return to the visitor center to explore the exhibits and watch a film that details the memorial’s history and significance.
Next, travel to historic Deadwood, a town steeped in Old West lore. Visit Mount Moriah Cemetery, also known as “Boot Hill,” the final resting place of legendary figures like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. Take time to explore the town and immerse yourself in its storied past by enjoying local street shows, such as the Deadwood Alive performances, which occur daily except Sundays and feature reenactments of the town’s most famous gunfights. As the day comes to a close, we get together for dinner in one of Deadwood’s restaurants. (B,D)
Day 3 - Mount Rushmore National Monument
After breakfast, we head to the Black Hills Gold Factory, where skilled artisans demonstrate the intricate process of creating gold jewelry. Watch as they transform raw materials into stunning pieces using techniques like lost-wax casting and diamond setting. Next, pay a visit to the iconic Shrine of Democracy, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Marvel at the larger-than-life sculptures of four U.S. presidents and delve into the memorial’s history at the on-site museum. In the afternoon, board the 1880 Train of the Black Hills Central Railroad for a scenic ride through the stunning mountain landscape. The tracks, originally laid in the 1880s to service local mines, offer a glimpse into the area’s past while showcasing its natural beauty.
Return to Rapid City for a stop at the Presidential Statues tribute, where life-size bronze statues of all U.S. presidents create a unique and educational photo opportunity. We end the day with dinner and live entertainment at Fort Hays Western Dinner and Show, where you can enjoy a delicious meal and a performance highlighting the spirit of the Wild West. (B,D)
Day 4 - The Great Buffalo Round-Up
Begin your day with an early pancake breakfast at Custer State Park, fueling up for the excitement of the Great Buffalo Roundup. Watch in awe as cowboys and park crews work together to herd nearly 1,300 buffalo, a thrilling spectacle of dust and rumbling hooves.
After enjoying an included lunch at the State Game Lodge, travel to Hot Springs, home of the Mammoth Site. This world-renowned excavation site features the fossils of 58 woolly mammoths, offering a fascinating glimpse into the Ice Age and the world’s largest collection of its kind. (B,L)
Day 5 - Badlands National Park
Begin your day with a visit to Chapel in the Hills, a tranquil sanctuary nestled at the foot of the Black Hills. This peaceful retreat offers a serene atmosphere and breathtaking views, setting the tone for a memorable day ahead.
Next, stop at the famed Wall Drug Store, a one-of-a-kind shopping destination featuring Western clothing, Indian pottery, and a favorite watering hole since the 1930s. Enjoy time for shopping and lunch on your own amidst the unique charm and history of this iconic establishment.
In the afternoon, embark on a guided tour through Badlands National Park, a striking geologic landscape formed over millions of years by wind, rain, and erosion. Marvel at the park’s otherworldly beauty as you learn about its fascinating history and diverse ecosystem from your knowledgeable guide.
Return to Rapid City for a special farewell dinner that celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the region. Delight in a captivating performance by an Indian dancer, storyteller, and flute player, offering a magical ending to your journey through the breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences of this remarkable corner of the world. Day 6 - Depart Rapid City
Following a delightful breakfast, a convenient group transfer to the Rapid City Regional Airport (RAP) will be available for flights scheduled to depart after 10:00 a.m. This transportation service ensures a smooth and hassle-free end to your unforgettable journey, allowing you to reminisce about your experiences and cherish the memories you’ve created throughout your visit to the breathtaking landscapes and cultural wonders of South Dakota.
