Day 1 - Newport, RI
Let’s step back in time to August 18, 1920!
The 19th amendment was ratified by Congress on August 18, 1920. We are commemorating this American centennial with a day tour in Newport, RI, a city that played a role in the women’s suffrage movement.
We will start our exciting day, by meeting our step on guide who will be dressed as a suffragette and who will narrate the motorcoach tour of the captivating Ocean Drive. She will highlight the sights connected to the votes campaign and the remarkable women who lived or “summered” in Newport.
After, enjoy a self guided tour of the Mable House. Alva Vanderbilt Belmont’s mansion which she called her “temple to the arts” which features a half a million cubic feet of marble! Alva was not only a fixture in the women’s right movement, but a critical benefactor, holding rallies at her Newport property.
Lunch will be at the Atlantic Resort. While you enjoy your first course, your guide will present a brief, engaging video about the history of US suffrage. After dessert, our guide will lead an entertaining “Women’s right to vote rally”.
