Itinerary
Day 1 - Home - The Berkshires
Journey on over to the Berkshires where you will experience first-hand how many of the country’s wealthiest families lived over the last decades of the 19th century. These families took up summertime residency in the mansions of the Berkshires where there was (and still continues to be) clean mountain air, and pristine hills. This was the Gilded Age.
Our first stop will be at Ventfort Hall, which was home to Sarah Morgan, sister of the illustrious J P Morgan. Ventfort Hall is the home of The Museum of the Gilded Age. The Museum of the Gilded Age interprets the great changes that occurred in American life, industry, and society during the Nineteenth Century which was a fascinating period of American history.
Next, enjoy lunch on the terrace at the Mount. The Mount is a turn-of-the-century home that Edith Wharton designed and built. Like Jefferson’s Monticello, it is an autobiographical house, one that definitely embodies its creator’s spirit.
The final stop of the day will be Naumkeag. With its gracious house, magnificent gardens, and panoramic views, Naumkeag is a quintessential country estate of the Gilded Age. This architectural masterpiece is, at its heart, a family home.
