Newfoundland In-Depth

On the edge of North America, Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the best places to appreciate nature in all its glory. Never-ending coastlines, thick boreal forests, and ancient rock formations – the natural, wild beauty of this place surrounds you at every turn. The living landscape is its own wonder – teeming with seabirds, moose, caribou, and rich marine life. Plus, let’s not forget incredible “Newfie” hospitality.

Day 1 - Home – Deer Lake, Canada

Transfer to the airport for the flight to Newfoundland. Upon arrival in Deer Lake, transfer to our Rocky Harbor hotel for a two-night stay. Once settled, we get together for a welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2 - Gros Morne National Park

Today, discover why Gros Morne National Park is truly one of the highlights of our tour. Situated on the west coast of the island, the park provides a rare example of the process of continental drift, where deep ocean crust and the rocks of the earth’s mantle lie exposed. After, we continue to explore many of the facilities the park has to offer and marvel at the beautiful scenery. Visit the Lobster Cove Lighthouse which has marked the marine approach to Rocky Harbor and the entrance of Bonne Bay since 1897. The light is still run by the Canadian Coast Guard. It is now automated, but the light-keeper’s house is open as a park interpretive exhibit. Then, enjoy a scenic boat tour as we learn the geology of the Tablelands, see the bald eagles that frequent the deep waters of the fjord, and hear the history of the small villages nestled on the shores. It is an unforgettable experience; some say the scenery is unequaled in eastern Canada. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Cow Head - Gander

Have your camera at the ready as your time in Gros Morne National Park draws to a close. Later, we travel through central Newfoundland and on to Gander. Gander is nestled in the heart of Newfoundland and the site of Gander International Airport, once an important refueling stop for transatlantic aircraft, and still a preferred emergency landing point for aircraft facing on-board medical or security issues. During our time in Gander, you will find out the inspiration for the book - The Day the World Came to Town, following the 9/11 tragedy. Then, enjoy a visit to the North Atlantic Aviation Museum to see how aviation has played a crucial role in the development of Gander. (B,D)

Day 4 - Gander - Clarenville

We begin our day with a scenic drive along the rocky coast of Notre Dame Bay which leads to the beautiful outport of Twillingate. Twillingate embodies everything where the many Newfoundland and Labrador outports (a community where the sea was their only “road”) are famous for: stunning coastline, historical, picturesque streets, culturally-rich entertainment, and peaceful country roads. Here, we visit the Prime Berth Fishing & Heritage Centre, comprised of hundred year old fish stores, stages and flakes. We have the opportunity to even touch a 15 meter Sei whale skeleton and view life from under the sea with the live underwater camera. Then, we head out on the Trans-Canada Highway to visit Terra Nova National Park, the most easterly of Canada’s beautiful national parks. Abundant natural resources, such as fish and sea mammals, have attracted people to the Terra Nova area for at least 5,000 years. Keep your camera close at hand for wildlife along the way. (B,D)

Day 5 - Clarenville – St. John’s

Saying goodbye to Clarenville, we arrive in the capital city of St. John’s - Canada’s oldest and most distinctive city, for a two-night stay. Rising spectacularly from the water’s edge, St. John’s combines a modern city with small town hospitality and is full of history and life. During our city tour, we see the quaint side streets of a thousand colors, the Victorian architecture of the downtown area, the busy modern waterfront, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Confederation building, the charming Quidi Vidi village, and the panoramic view from Signal Hill National Historic Site. (B,D)

Day 6 - St. John's

This morning, we travel to Bay Bulls for one of the highlights of our tour, a boat tour to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Witless Bay is alive with the rhythm of four million wings beating and of 40 ton whales pulsing through clear blue water. The reserve contains North America’s largest Atlantic puffin colony with more than 260,000 pairs of the province’s official bird nesting here during the late spring and summer. The waters around Bay Bulls and the Reserve is a favorite feeding area for the annual migration of the Humpback Whales that make their way to the waters of Newfoundland each summer. All of our senses will be delighted during an educational and entertaining boat tour. We visit the most easterly point of land in North America, Cape Spear National Historic Site (where the oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland is located). The remainder of the day is free for your own leisure. Later, we have a farewell traditional “Jiggs Dinner”. (B,D)

Day 7 - St. John's - Home

This morning, we transfer to the St. John’s International Airport where we say farewell and return home with many fond memories of our time in Newfoundland & Labrador. (B)
