FLORIADE | Everything You Need To Know & How To Visit

The Netherlands is world-renowned for its art and historical museums, its scenic canals and waterways, and seemingly endless fields of colorful flowers. As a matter of fact, while many people associate the Netherlands with tulips, this colorful country also exports many other types of flowers including daffodils, hyacinths, and crocuses.

Welcome to the once in a decade International Horticulture Exhibition.

Since 1936, the Netherlands has hosted a large horticultural show that has evolved into Floriade, the International Horticultural Exhibition held every ten years since 1960 for six months. The International Horticultural Exhibition has a futuristic eco-theme “growing green cities” that will demonstrate green solutions to make our cities more livable, more sustainable, and more fun. This theme was chosen because according to recent research by 2050, 68% of the world’s plants will grow in cities. In addition to the overarching theme of Green Cities, there are four sub-themes that include Greening the City, Feeding the City, Healthy Cities, and Energizing the City

Relax in a futuristic city garden.

Tours of Distinction has created a relaxing cruise holiday that includes a full day at this amazing exhibition whose fascinating displays are inspired by the idea of bringing the countryside into the city. Visitors to this one-of-a-kind extravaganza will be treated to the sights and smells of some 3,000 trees, shrubs, perennials, creepers, hydrophytes, and flower bulbs. Set across a 150-acre site visitors can also explore more than 300 eco-homes that have been built as part of the show, with plans that will turn the area into a “green” neighborhood of 660 homes once the show is finished.

The plants that are on display have been chosen for their special qualities and how they can contribute to biodiversity, air purification, food production, and climate management in a green city space. The arboretum constitutes an alphabetically organized encyclopedia of 650 trees and shrubs that you can actually stroll through.  Visitors will discover which trees and plants can make their cities greener. What makes the arboretum unique is that all the trees contribute to a healthy, green city.

Take a ride on a cable car.

Highlights of the show include an enormous greenhouse equipped with a cable car that takes people through the venue giving them a  birds-eye view of how green cities can look in the future while showcasing the potential for sustainable use of urban cable cars.  More than 40 countries will have their own pavilions showing how they are greening the city in their country. There will also be presentations on sustainability, programs on art and culture, and delicious tasting sessions where visitors can experience and discover new eco-technologies. There are so many ways to enjoy this exhibit from just enjoying the beauty of the flowers to learning how to make your house and city greener.
